Buying Blinds? Learn how to get a great deal every time:

Think OnLine or Costco will give you the best product at the best price? How about Home Depot and Lowe’s? Not necessarily. Let’s compare apples to apples here.

In this post I’ll look at the least expensive blinds called cut downs.  Cut down blinds seem to be all the rage on the internet. Why? They cost much less than custom made blinds. A cut down is a “Blank” that the ends are chopped off and the length is alerted to the desired length. The blanks are made in China in a variety of sizes. They ship the blanks here and factories cut them to size. I have seen some very good cut down 2’ woods and well as faux woods.

I’ve also seen some very poorly made blanks. Complete with plastic head rails, cheap components and vinyl slats. Yes, there very inexpensive, however the first time you put them up they will warp and or break. If you don’t mind your blinds smiling at you and not working then these units are a perfect choice for any tightwad.  The Home Depot and Lowes offer an in store cut down in this category. How do you know the difference? If you’re buying on line you don’t.

I had to rent a condo late last year for 4 months while waiting to close escrow on a home. The condo owner purchased 2’ woods from an on line store. Since it was a rental, the blinds were cheap. They didn’t close well. The balance was off and the slats were warping. They looked funny because the ladder strings were not even between blinds. It was for this reason I knew they were cut downs.  The finished cut size was smaller than a custom blind. They didn’t fit as well as a custom blind.

Last Christmas my family and I went on a ski trip to Brian Head Utah. The condo we rented has blinds off the shelf from Wal-Mart or Target. They were discolored and warped so badly I had to take a photo.

Many local window covering retailers can sell you blinds for less than you going to Home Depot or Lowes and doing it yourself. Many local retailers will also try and over charge you. I have seen bid from my clients from well know window covering retailers that were 100% more than me. FOR THE SAME PRODUCT!

I have been monitoring a window covering chat group since 1999 and many people brag how much they over charged clients. I have been a lone wolf on the subject of fair pricing since the beginning. I’m still in business and many of them are long gone. Since I have set up over 300 people in the blind business I do practice what I preach. Fair pricing for everyone. We combine cleaver marketing with high impact advertising to get our clients. This lowers our marketing cost and we pass the savings on to our clients.
